Institutional structure, volume of aid, partner countries

The Danish Foreign Ministry is divided into three units, the "North Group", the "Trade Council" and the "South Group". The "South Group" is responsible for Denmark's relations with the countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Pacific (except Australia, Japan, and New Zealand) and for bilateral and multilateral development cooperation. The "South Group" is commonly known as DANIDA (Danish Development Cooperation Assistance).

Within the Danish Foreign Ministry 283 employees are working in the "South Group" in Copenhagen and an additional 131 employees partly work in the field of development cooperation. Adding 151 diplomats and project staff in the embassies and 263 local staff in the field, an overall 828 employees are working in Danish development cooperation.

Main partner countries are Tanzania, Vietnam, Uganda and Mozambique, which together received 225 million US$ in 2002 or more than 13% of funds allocated. The relation of aid volume to GNI further decreased from a very high level of 0,96% in 2002 to now 0,84% making Denmark rank second after Norway after several years ranking top in the list.

The following chart of OECD highlights Denmark's development cooperation activities.
